This last Sunday was my first Fathers Day so I expected to get a few phone calls from buddies wishing me a relaxing day, maybe get an invite to play a quick round of golf, but no, I get phone calls asking me “What kind of putter is Rocco using?”
Being in the golf business I get asked quite often about my opinions on equipment, “what’s the best driver for me?”, “Do I need a long putter?” “What does bounce mean?”. and I love it when golf companies, like Odyssey, comes out with a club that has such a distinction that even a casual observer watching a round of golf on tv will go “What the hell kind of club is that?” So was the case this weekend when the spotlight was put on Rocco & Tiger during the final round of the U.S. OPEN, Rocco was using a spaceship looking putter by Odyssey Golf called the Sabertooth, which I honestly think kept him in the hunt on Sunday. It even got a plug from NBC golf analyst Johnny Miller who mentioned it on a couple of occasions (coincidently Johnny is a Callaway Staff member & Odyssey is a division of Callaway, how ironic), but I feel those mentions were warranted. To a professional golfer like Rocco, the Sabertooth is just another putter, but to golf fans who watched him closely on Sunday and again during Monday’s playoff, it looks more like a must have! So now all of my buddies think this Sabertooth putter is going to be the answer to all of their putting woes (even my dad was asking me about it), and what do I tell them? “Why don’t you all watch to see what kind of putter next weeks tournament winner uses then get back to me….” The story continues….. |
